It improves cooling efficiency by maintaining clean heat transfer surfaces , from Radiators, DG - sets, Closed Cooling and chiller System.

Before testing of Nitrite level, Here is some point and guideline,  what you need to do. : 1 take the following readings; pH, TDS (uS), and nitrite level.and record. 2 add the Chemical your are using. 3. wait for a period of time for the sysem to circulate. hours> 4. Re check the readings. and record. 5 track these readings
for a period of time.

If the TDS and Nitrite drop you have a leak/ unknown makeup. if the TDS stays stable and the nitrite drops you have a biological problem. Bacteria that convert nitrite to nitrate.

Using Procedure:

RXSOL-11-1008-025  is mixed with fresh water 3 to 20 percent depending on deposition of scaling.

The most effective method is circulation for large systems or components like boilers, evaporators, condensers, heat exchangers and generally closed systems that have the capability to circulate at a temperature of approximately 40-60°C, for 6-12 hours and solutions of 10-40% of RXSOL-11-1008-025 in water. Keep in mind that the strength of the solution is analogous to the degree of deposition of scale .
In case of small components , the soak method in an immersion bath can be used.

If the equipment to be cleaned is contaminated by oil, grease, sludge or carbonized oil, then first of all clean the system with degreaser  RXSOL-10-1005.

RXSOL-11-1008-025 should be mixed with fresh water to form a solution of 5-30%, depending on the extent of scaling.

6% Sodium Hypochlorite Solution. Disinfectant for use in drinking water. Use one drop of solution per 10 ltrs of drinking water, 600 ml of solution per 36 tons of drinking water.

General formulation to calculate  how much bleach is needed to add to a tank or a pipeline to disinfect it to a given chlorine residual using a given disinfectant. Usually someone wants to know how to meet an AWWA Standard (like C651-92, Disinfection of Water Mains). The equation below should be used to estimate the amount of sodium / Calcium hypochlorite (Chlorine Water is 6.00% sodium hypochlorite) needed to disinfect a given quantity of water to a desired chlorine concentration.

                                                                        req'd residual in ppm
  Valume of hypo  =  volume of water  x  (  ----------------------------- )
                                                                           1,000,000 x hypo %

For example , say you had installed a new 5,000 gallon tank and wanted to make sure that you had at least a 100 ppm solution of chlorine in it.

How much 6.00% Hypochlorite would you need to add  ?

  • (5,000 gal x 100 ppm) / (1,000,000 x .06) = 8.33 gallons

How much 12% Hypochlorite solution would you need ?

  • (5,000 gal x 100 ppm) / (1,000,000 x .12) = 4.17 gallons

If you use calcium hypochlorite (the white, powder version of chlorine, like HTH pool cleaner), the equation becomes:

                                                                                                              req'd residual in PPM
Wgt. of Calcium Hypo (lbs)= gal of water x 8.33 lb / gal m x   ( ----------------------------- )
                                                                                                               1,000,000 x hypo %

  • This is simply the previous equation multiplied by the conversion factor of 8.33 pounds per gallon of water.

Let's assume that we still need to disinfect 5,000 gallons at 100 ppm.

How many pounds of 65% calcium hypochlorite (HTH pool cleaner) are needed?

  • (8.33 lbs/ gal. x 5,000 gal x 100 ppm) / (1,000,000 x .65) = 6.4 pounds
Note:

Spraying - Following rough washing to a good Water White or better, apply dilute Bleach to 1 - 3% strength.  First wet the tank surface (spray with DI water), then spray all over with Bleach, wait 30 minute (but do not allow to dry) and then rinse very well with DI water, including the tank top towards the sump.  To ensure that you have covered all areas properly, this process should be carried out at least twice with good DI water.

Injection -no.

Re-circulation - Following rough washing  to a good Water White standard or better, apply dilute Bleach to 1-3% strength.  Mix sufficient Bleach with fresh water in the tank and heat this mixture to 40 - 500C, circulate through the drop line if fitted and than circulate through butterworth machine for 3 hours.  After re-circulation immediately warm butterworth to (500 C) the tank for 3 hours at maximum pressure, increase the water temperature to 80-850 C after 45 minutes.  Check (by smell) that there is no Bleach remaining, then fresh water rinse and dry.

** When there are a number of tanks requiring re-circulation, it may be significantly more efficient to make up a large batch or number of batches that can be transferred on between  tanks as required.

* Use a strainer at the pump stack when circulating any solution.
Tank Lining - Stainless / Zinc / Epoxy / Phenolic (Extreme care must be taken if product other than bleach substitute is to be used in any coated space).

**These products become more aggressive with temperature increase, and should not be allowed to dry on tank walls or stored in cargo tanks as cleaning solution or slops.

The Importance High-Pressure Cleaning

The job of high-pressure cleaning can be done easier & quicker by simply using AquaTuff incorrect dosages. Using a high-pressure cleaner alone, without any CLEANER, will not  achieve  optimal cleaning results High-pressure cleaning primarily refers to cleaning of Hard  surfaces, such  as Decks, Tanks, Engine-rooms, etc. and in the majority of cases the cleaning is done according to the so-called two-step method:

Step 1:  Spraying the  AquaTuff over the area to be cleaned.
Step 2:   Washing down the area using a high-pressure water jet.

After the AquTuff has been sprayed on the surface and before the wash down begins, the chemicals penetrate & thoroughly moistens dirt & other grime. During wash down, the AquaTuff thoroughly dissolves the particles of dirt, even oil and fat, in the water spray and thus achieves optimal cleaning results. In addition to being more effective, the use of AquaTuff substantially reduces the time required for the Cleaning operation, as well as preventing dirt from reforming on the surface. The use of AquaTuff in correct dosages is half the job done.

General Cleaning :- AquaTuff can be used for all types of cleaning &  degreasing & may  be applied by  Brush, Hand spray, high and low-pressure washing machines etc. Time necessary for cleaning depends on the nature and thickness of the deposits. 20-30 min. will suffice for   most applications. Hardened, carbonised or aged deposits may require up to 4 hours. If  the cleaning solution is not heavily contaminated, it may be re-used at a later stage. If allowed to cool, the de-gassing procedure must be repeated. Depending on the degree of contamination AquaTuff should be mixed with warm water at a rate of 50-200 ml   per 10 litres. i.e. 1 cup of AquaTuff to a bucket of water. The aqutuff solution can be applied  simply by mops, brushes or rags, or by dipping the soiled articles into  the Aquatuff solution. After cleaning, rinse off with cold or warm water. Due to high foaming properties, AquaTuff is not recommended for washing machines.

20-50 % with fresh water . Also acts as an acid-neutralizing agent for Boiler & Colling systems during cleaning & maintenance.
Heavy Soil deposition                    Use Undiluted from to 20-50% diluted with water.
Medium soil deposition                 10-20%  diluted with water.
Light Soil ( general degreasing )   5-10% diluted with water.

Importance of Alkleen Safety Liquid / Aquatuff Cargo hold cleaner for coal and pet coke:

Aquatuff High foam and Aqua tuff / Alkleen Safety Liquid cleaner is most common marine cleaning chemicals for cargo hold cleaning after coal and pet coke.

Two Major Benefit of cleaning of Pet Coke:-

Pet coke residue contains oil content, which is creating more difficulties during the cleaning operation. Aquatuff high foam and one of our specialized product called Alkleen Safety Liquid which is absolutely non-hazardous and biodegradable cleaner.

Petcokes also have sulphur content which is the main cause of corrosion due to its electrochemical corrosion mechanism. In presence of moisture and sulfur metal surface charges as anodic and damaging the hold paint due to electrical ion charges. Here presence of Alkleen Safety Liquid / Aquatuff increasing the alkaline effect and neutralizes the effect of Sulphur.

Ship marine hold cleaning chemicals

Aqua tuff most suitable for cargo hold and tank cleaning.

Aquatuff High foam plays very important role during ship hold cleaning http://rxmarine.com/Aqua-Tuff-High-Foam-conc , Its high foam abilityincreasing Aquatuff cleaning power on the vertical surface, As liquid product can't sustain on the vertical surface while HIGH composite FOAM can sustain on the surface which is resulting from good cleaning effect.
Extra foaming is major features which is differentiating Aquatuff high foam to general Aquatuff.

Aquatuff High foam using procedure and cleaning method :
1st Step Cleaning of extra and excess loose particle:::
Before applying  Aquatuff high foam on hold surface, Makes sure extra loose cargo particle should be removed manually or Air blown method. Then cleaning procedure can be followed either by high foam machine or Manual.
2nd step is for Mixing and dilution of Aquatuff:::
If cleaning step is with HP machine ( High Pressure ), Then mix concentrated Aquatuff high foam with fresh water, it can be diluted 1 Ltrs Aquatuff High foam with 4 to 5 Ltrs Fresh water.

If cleaning step followed by hand spray, Then apply aquatuff high foam neat on the surface. Approx  1 ltr covers 10 to 12 square meter.

3rd Step final procedure:::

Leave for about 30 – 45 minutes. The surface remains wet. Wash down with hot water at around 80 - 90 degree. Rinsing procedure can be repeated 1 to 3 times if required for Cargo Tank and Cargo Hold Cleaning.

Here the question that arises is why Aquatuff Cleaner is so important during Ship Hold Cleaning?

Aquatuff is alkaline in nature which neutralizes the acidic residue created due to the presence of moisture and products like coal, sulphur, salt etc. And emulsification effect of aquatuff makes alll oil stain water soluble.  It means Aquatuff's major role is to neutralize the acidic residue and emulsifying Oil residue. One more important feature of Aquatuff high foam results in the formation of dense foam with high-pressure machines, which can easily be applied even on vertical surfaces.

Aquatuff High Foam - Acts as an Acid Neutralizer - Useful for coal, Sulfur, Salt as its residue when in contact with water, is acidic in nature which directly damages the painted and metal surfaces.

Aquatuf High Foam - Acts as an Oil residue Emulsifier - Useful for removal of coal and oily residue.

Aquatuff High Foam - Results in Dense foam - Can be applied on the vertical surface for the long duration.

Sodium Sulphite (sulfite) with Catalyst Powder

$

Catalyzed sodium sulfite for corrosion prevention. Generally speaking, sulfite is not present in natural water.  In boiler feedwater conditioning sodium sulfite is fed to a boiler to remove dissolved oxygen and thus prevent pitting. For the reaction between sulfite and oxygen to proceed rapidly and completely, it is necessary to maintain an excess sulfite concentration at an elevated temperature.

Alias:

Sodium Sulfite

Application:

Sodium sulfite anhydrous is a white granular material with the chemical formula Na2SO3

It is primarily used in pulp and paper industry. It is used in water treatment as an oxygen scavenger agent, in the photographic industry to protect developer solutions from oxidation, in textile industry as a bleaching, as a desulfurising and as a dechlorinating agent and in leather trade for the sulfitisation of tanning extracts. It is used in chemical manufacturing as a sulfonation and sulfomethylation agent. It is used in the production of rubber chemicals, sulfur dyes and other chemical compounds. It is used in other applications including ore flotation, oil recovery, food preservative, making dyes, and detergent.

Using Procedure:

Dose of Sulfite  can be controlled by this method :::  Because it readily reacts with oxygen to form sulfate, sulfite is not usually found in natural water systems. In its most common form, sodium sulfite, it is widely used as an oxygen scavenger in feedwater conditioning to prevent pitting in boilers; as a pulping or pulp-bleaching agent by the paper industry; to neutralize residual chlorine in potable water, sewage, industrial effluents, and textile process waters; and as a reducing agent in still other manufacturing processes.

Sample water over 100°F will cause a false-high reading; therefore, quickly cool to room temperature before testing. To prevent a false-low reading caused by the reaction between sulfite and ambient air or dissolved oxygen, water samples should be capped while cooling and then tested without delay. An iodometric drop test is the most popular field method for determining sodium sulfite concentrations.

Reagent packs, containing an instruction and chemicals only, may be purchased for use with buret setups. Note: Sulfide and ferrous iron cause positive interference; copper and nitrite cause negative interference.

Sulfite, Titrimetric Method(0-100ppm)

The test  for sulfite is based on the colour change end point reaction. At the end point reagent combines with the indicator to form a blue color.

Apparatus Required

Buret, automatic, 25 ml    -  1 ( Sample Tube, Graduated, 25 mL, plastic w/cap and white dot )
Casserole porcelain, 210 ml  -  1
Cylinder, graduated, 50 ml  -  1
Measuring dipper (plastic)  -  1
Stirring rod, glass    -  1

Chemicals Required

TK - 13 ::: RXSOL-62-5503-002
TK - 14 ::: RXSOL-62-5503-003
TK - 15 ::: RXSOL-62-5503-004  ( 1 ml =0.5 mg SO3 )

Procedure for Test

The water sample should be freshly obtained with as little contact as possible with air. Do not filter the sample, but cool it to room temperature (70 to 800F).
NOTE:
Sample must be cooled to less than 100ºF (38ºC) to prevent high test results.
Sample must be protected from air contact while cooling to prevent low test results.

1. Measure 50 ml of the water sample with the graduated cylinder . For error free result Collect water to be tested in a clean, preferably large-mouthed, bottle to overflowing. Immediately cap and cool to room temperature.

2. Add three or four drops of TK - 13 ::: RXSOL-62-5503-002  to the sample Swirl to mix. Sample should turn red.

3. Add  TK - 14 ::: RXSOL-62-5503-003 Powder a dipper at a time, swirling after each dipper, until color changes from red to colorless. Add 2 more dippers. Swirl until dissolved.  ( Note : Use the plastic dipper to add TK - 14 ::: RXSOL-62-5503-003 to the sample. Add only one measure at a time and stir thoroughly between each addition of TK - 14 ::: RXSOL-62-5503-003. All the particle of TK - 14 ::: RXSOL-62-5503-003 may not dissolve and this may create a slight haze in the sample. Continue to add the TK - 14  in this manner until the red color disappears. It is not necessary that the sample solution be exactly neutralized, only that the sample turn colorless. When the sample is colorless, add one additional measure of TK - 14 ::: RXSOL-62-5503-003 and stir. )

4. Add TK - 15 ::: RXSOL-62-5503-004 Reagent dropwise, swirling and counting after each drop, until color changes from colorless to a faint but permanent blue. Always hold bottle in vertical position.
This color change is taken as the endpoint. Record the ml of TK - 15 ::: RXSOL-62-5503-004 solution used.

Calculation of Results

FORMULA:    ppm sulfite as SO3  = ml  of TK - 15 ::: RXSOL-62-5503-004  x       500    /  ml SAMPLE

Using a 50 ml sample, sulfite, in parts per million as SO3  is equal to the ml of TK - 15 ::: RXSOL-62-5503-004 required multiplied by 10.

Limitations of Test :::

This method is rapid and adaptable to field determinations.  It is affected by any oxidizable substances in the water such as organic matter sulfides and nitrites.  The presence of these interfering substances will cause the sulfite content obtained from this titration to by shown as a higher value than actually exists.

Note:

The use of untreated water in a boiler can cause scale buildup and corrosion. Treating the boiler water with chemicals - known as boiler feed water treatment - will increase the life of the boiler and reduce maintenance costs. Scale is formed from calcium and magnesium salts that are carried in solution in the water used in the boiler. Treatment of the boiler water by raising the pH with the addition of alkaline salts – such as sodium or potassium hydroxide – will prohibit most of the calcium and magnesium salts from precipitating and causing scale buildup in the boiler. Sodium sulfite is a constituent of some boiler feed water treatments. This constituent acts as an oxygen scavenger. The presence of oxygen in boiler water will lead to corrosion of the boiler . A chelating agent, sodium hexametaphosphate is sometimes added to boiler water to inhibit hard water salts from precipitating to form scale. Hydrochloric acid is sometimes utilized in acid boils to remove scale form the boiler.

Short Description:
Removal of oxygen using commercial sodium sulfite and a catalyzed sodium sulfite makes great difference . After 25 seconds of contact, catalyzed sodium sulfite removed the oxygen completely. Uncatalyzed sodium sulfite removed less than 50% of the oxygen in this same time period. In a boiler feedwate

Popular Oxygen Scavengers

Catalyzed sodium sulfite Na2SO3  60 kg drum, 91% anhydrous powder

Must be dissolved in water to give a 3-5% solution.

Catalyzed sodium metabisulfite NaHSO3

The liquid of  25 wt% sodium metabisulfite solution Tends to react with atmospheric oxygen over time. More acidic than ammonium bisulfite.

Ammonium bisulfite NH4HSO3 :  37 wt% solution of NH4HSO3 is selected for use due to ease of handling. However, ammonium ion does provide an additional food source for bacteria.

Calculation of Oxygen Scavenger Requirement

Use the following steps:

a) Calculate the mass of oxygen in solution.

b) Multiply the mass of oxygen in solution (a) by the feed ratio.

c) Add additional 20 mg/liter in excess.

d) Take into account the concentration of the oxygen scavenger in the supplied chemical.

For Example:

How much ammonium bisulfite (37%wt concentration) will be required to treat 10,000 liter of water containing 8 mg/liter of dissolved oxygen?

 [(10 x 10,000 liter x 8 mg/liter) + 10,000 liter x 20 mg/liter] / 0.37

(feed ratio x volume x oxygen content) + (volume x residual scavenger concentration) / concentration

 = (800,000 mg + 200,000 mg) / 0.37

 = 2,702,703 mg

This is approx. 2.7 kg of 37% wt. ammonium bisulfite

 Assuming a specific gravity of 37 weight % ammonium bisulfite is 1.185  = 2.7 kg / 1.185 kg/liter = 2.3 liters of ammonium bisulfite to be injected.

Short Description:
It is a well - balanced blend for boiler water treatment products, resulting in a scale and corrosion control by one shot operation. A one-step treatment to control the formation of rust and scale in low pressure and auxillary boilers with working pressur

Chemical feed should be continuous. Chemical pumping rates can create problems especially for neat feed set ups. Using on/off feed systems such as a recycle timer can create problems. Chemical feed pumps should be sized or product strengths should be adjusted to allow continuous feed.

Steam and carbon dioxide leave continuously, so setting up a neutralizing amine pump to feed intermittently can lead to wide variations in condensate pH control. If sampling is done from a condensate receiver, the tank volume may buffer the variations and the changes may not be noticed, but corrosion could be occurring to areas of the piping that see the rapidly changing pH.

If polymeric dispersants, phosphonates, phosphate, or chelants are fed intermittently into the feedwater using a recycle timer, and the amines are not fed continuously, a cycle of iron slugs returning in the condensate can be followed by slugs of high dispersancy cleaning of the iron from the deaerator and dragging it into the boiler.

Load changes can affect chemical concentrations when the chemical feed is base fed. Example: Steam production of one million lbs./day; 4% blowdown; 20% active boiler polymer product fed at 5 pounds per day. The calculated daily average polymer concentration would be 24 ppm. Assume peak plant production load is 60,000 lbs./hr., but during the overnight hours the load is only 5,000 lbs./hr. If the dispersant is being fed continuously over the 24 hours, during the 8- hour low load period, the boiler polymer concentration would have increased to over 200 ppm. Upon high fire when production resumes, carryover is very possible because of over concentrating the polymeric dispersant.

Chemical feed needs to be paced to steam production, especially where significant load changes occur.

Carbon dioxide can concentrate in steam and condensate making neutralizing amine treatment impractical. Carbon dioxide levels can be relatively low in steam exiting a boiler at only a few ppm, but if there are areas where it becomes “trapped” and can accumulate, concentrations can reach extremely high levels into the hundreds or even thousands of ppm.

CO2 is a non-condensable gas. It has a distribution ratio in the steam piping and condenses at points throughout the system. At the boiling point, the solubility of the gas in water is extremely low. The solubility of the CO2 is actually lower in the condensate than it is in the steam. For the CO2 to escape from the steam into the water it will accumulate in the steam space just above the water level until the partial pressure becomes high enough for the CO2 in the incoming steam to be able to exit into the condensate. This creates a steady state condition of CO2 coming in and exiting, but an area of severe localized corrosion occurs where the carbon dioxide concentration is high.

The highest CO2 concentration normally occurs just above the condensate water level. If there is an area where condensation is occurring and running down pipes or the sides of vessels, the CO2 concentration will be very high and the pH will be about 5.3 – 5.5 in that location creating high corrosion rates.

The solubility of CO2 increases dramatically as the condensate temperature falls below 212 °F. When there is an accumulation of CO2 in an area and the condensate temperature is relatively low, the amount of carbon dioxide going into solution will be extremely high. Where low-pressure steam is used that contains CO2 and the heat exchange process has relatively close temperature differentials between the steam and the condensate, there is potential for high uptake of the CO2 into the condensate and localized low pH.

Neutralizing amines are selected in an effort to condense in the right concentrations to carbon dioxide condensation levels throughout the steam system. Neutralizing amines cannot control corrosion where this localized accumulation of carbon dioxide occurs since the high CO2 overwhelms the demand for the amine. Even point source addition of amine may not be able to satisfy the demand.

Where the concentrating effect of CO2 occurs, methods of reducing the problem include eliminating or minimizing CO2 in the steam, venting off the CO2 in the localized area, eliminating condensate in the area, applying a filming amine or metal passivator, or using higher temperature steam and increasing condensate temperature to reduce the CO2 content in the condensate.

Industrial production and laboratory synthesis

On an industrial scale, sodium thiosulphate is produced chiefly from liquid waste products of sodium sulphide or sulphur dye manufacture. In the laboratory, this salt can be prepared by heating an aqueous solution of sodium sulphite with sulphur.

Principal reactions and applications

Thiosulfate anion characteristically reacts with dilute acids to produce sulfur, sulfur dioxide and water-

1.Na2S2O3 + 2HCl →2NaCl + S + SO2 + H2O

This reaction is known as a "clock reaction", because when the sulfur reaches a certain concentration the solution turns from colourless to a pale yellow. This reaction has been employed to generate colloidal sulfur. When the protonation is conducted at low temperatures, H2S2O3 (thiosulfuric acid) can be obtained. It is a somewhat strong acid with pKas of 0.6 and 1.7 for the first and second dissociation respectively.

Iodometry

In analytical chemistry, the most important use comes from the fact that the thiosulfate anion reacts stoichiometrically with iodine, reducing it to iodide as it is oxidized to tetrathionate:

Photographic processing

The terminal sulfur atom in S2O32− binds to soft metals with high affinity. Thus, silver halides, e.g. AgBr, typical components of photographic emulsions, dissolve upon treatment with aqueous thiosulfate:

2 S2O32− + AgBr →[Ag(S2O3)2]3−+ Br−

In this application to photographic processing, discovered by John Herschel and used for both film and photographic paper processing, the sodium thiosulfate is known as a photographic fixer, and is often referred to as hypo, from the original chemical name, hyposulphite of soda.

Gold extraction

Sodium thiosulfate is one component of an alternative lixiviant to cyanide for extraction of gold.[3] It forms a strong complex with gold(I) ions, [Au(S2O3)2]3−. The advantage of this approach is th

2 S2O32−(aq) + I2(aq) →S4O62−(aq) + 2 I−(aq)

Due to the quantitative nature of this reaction, as well as the fact that Na2S2O3•5H2O has an excellent shelf-life, it is used as a titrant in iodometry. Na2S2O3•5H2O is also a component of iodine clock experiments.

This particular use can be set up to measure the oxygen content of water through a long series of reactions. It is also used in estimating volumetrically the concentrations of certain compounds in solution (hydrogen peroxide, for instance) and in estimating the chlorine content in commercial bleaching powder and water.at thiosulfate is essentially non-toxic and that ore types that are refractory to gold cyanidation (e.g. carbonaceous or Carlin type ores) can be leached by thiosulfate. Some problems with this alternative process include the high consumption of thiosulfate, and the lack of a suitable recovery technique, since [Au(S2O3)2]3− does not adsorb to activated carbon, which is the standard technique used in gold cyanidation to separate the gold complex from the ore slurry.

Using Procedure:

Process for DE CHLORINATION :::

Dissolve the 500 grams of Sodium Thiosulfate in a large pitcher of lukewarm tap water. Stir until all the crystals are dissolved. Then transfer the solution with a funnel to the gallon jug. Top off the jug to make a full gallon of stock solution.

  • Add two drops of the stock solution per one gallon of the water to be treated.
  • One gallon can treat 37,850 gallons or more. Over-dosage is virtually impossible.
Note:

Analytical chemistry

Sodium thiosulfate is also used in analytical chemistry. It can, when heated with a sample containing aluminum cation, produce a white precipitation:

2 Al3+ + 3 S2O32− + 3 H2O →3 SO2 + 3 S + 2 Al(OH)3

Medical

It is used as an antidote to cyanide poisoning. Thiosulfate acts as a sulfur donor for the conversion of cyanide to thiocyanate (which can then be safely excreted in the urine), catalyzed by the enzyme rhodanase.

It has also been used as treatment of calciphylaxis in hemodialysis patients with end-stage renal disease.[6]

It is used in the management of extravasations during chemotherapy. Sodium thiosulfate prevents alkylation and tissue destruction by providing a substrate for the alkylating agents that have invaded the subcutaneous tissues. The dose may be 2mL of 0.17M (a solution of 4mL 10% sodium thiosulfate and 6mL sterile water for injection). It may be instilled subcutaneously into multiple sites using a small gauge needle. There is limited data on this method with few recommendations.

in foot baths for prophylaxis of ringworm, and as a topical antifungal agent for tinea versicolor.

in measuring the volume of extracellular body fluid and the renal glomerular filtration rate.

Sodium thiosulfate is also used:

As a component in hand warmers and other chemical heating pads that produce heat by exothermic crystallization of a supercooled solution.

In bleach

In pH testing of bleach substances. The universal indicator and any other liquid pH indicators are destroyed by bleach, rendering them useless for testing the pH. If one first adds sodium thiosulfate to such solutions, it will neutralize the color-removing effects of bleach and allow one to test the pH of bleach solutions with liquid indicators. The relevant reaction is akin to the iodine reaction: thiosulfate reduces the hypochlorite (active ingredient in bleach) and in so doing becomes oxidized to sulfate. The complete reaction is:

4 NaClO + Na2S2O3 + 2 NaOH →4 NaCl + 2 Na2SO4 + H2O

To dechlorinate tap water for aquariums or treat effluent from waste water treatments prior to release into rivers. The reduction reaction is analogous to the iodine reduction reaction. Treatment of tap water requires between 0.1 grams and 0.3 grams of pentahydrated (crystalline) sodium thiosulfate per 10 liters of water.

To lower chlorine levels in swimming pools and spas following super chlorination.

To remove iodine stains, e.g. after the explosion of nitrogen triiodide.

Similarly, sodium thiosulfate reacts with bromine to render harmless products. Solutions of sodium thiosulfate are commonly used as a precaution in chemistry laboratories when working with bromine.

In bacteriological water assessment.

In the tanning of leather.

To demonstrate the concept of reaction rate in chemistry classes. The thiosulfate ion can decompose into the sulfite ion and a colloidal suspension of sulfur, which is opaque. The equation for this acid-catalysed reaction is as follows:

S2O32−(aq) →SO32−(aq) + S(s)

To demonstrate the concept of supercooling in physics classes. Melted sodium thiosulfate is very easy to overcool to room temperature and when crystallization is forced, the sudden temperature jump to 48.3 °C can be experienced by touch.

As part of patina recipes for copper alloys.

Often used in pharmaceutical preparations as an anionic surfactant to aid in dispersion.

It can also be used as a very interesting solute in supersaturation experiments.

Coal Based Activated Carbon manufacturer and supplier

Alias:

550812

Active Matter:
100
Application:

Activated carbon is useful in drinking water treatment because it acts as an adsorbent , and can effectively remove particles and  organics from water. These organics are of great concern in water treatment because they react with many disinfectants, especially chlorine.

The use of granular Activated Carbon in wastewater treatment systems is a proven process for removal of organic compounds. As a tertiary treatment method, carbon adsorption and regeneration have been used to process domestic wastewaters contaminated with industrial wastes of organic origin as well as biologically treated waste waters. Activated Carbon, when contacted with water containing organic material, will remove these compounds selectively by a combination of adsorption of the less polar molecules, filtration of the larger particles, and partial deposition of colloidal material on the exterior surface. The quantity of Activated Carbon required will depend upon the degree of contamination.
